The plan of study
The Summa Theologica
The Summa is one work in three parts. The second part is itself divided. Death interrupted the third. The school follows that plan, and it does not pretend the Supplement is Thomas’s finished text.
Prima Pars
God and creation
The divine essence, the Trinity, creation, the angels, the human person, and God’s government of the world.
Prima Secundae
The journey home
Man’s last end, human acts, the passions, habits, sin, law, and grace.
Secunda Secundae
The virtues
Faith, hope, and charity; prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance; the gifts and states of life.
Tertia Pars
Christ and the sacraments
The Incarnate Word, his life and passion, and the sacraments. The Supplement, drawn from the Sentences commentary, treats what death left unfinished.
